If the businesses of Ho Chi Minh City was driving you crazy, why wouldn’t you take some days off? If you just craved for a gorgeous beach-trip but not so isolated, why wouldn’t you come to Vung Tau?

Perfect time to visit

Vung Tau is a top tourism attraction so every month around the year is travel time. Nonetheless, you should avoid stormy seasons (July to September), and peak seasons (summer and Tet holiday) if you do not prefer the crowd. If you don’t mind the crowd you should go in the summer, when tourism activities are their most active.


125km away from Ho Chi Minh city, Vung Tau is a good option for a short day trip..

Motorbike rider can follow Freeway 1 to Dong Nai then turn right to Freeway 51, continue going for 100km to Vung Tau (this way takes 3 – 3.5 hours).

Personal car
You can choose Highway Long Thanh – Dong Nai to cut down time to 2 – 2.5 hours

The route is Mien Dong car park (292 Dinh Bo Linh street) to Vung Tau car park (192 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street).

This is the fastest way to get to Vung Tau from Ho Chi Minh City. It only takes a bit more than an hour.


Where to go

Bai Truoc, Bai Sau

Bai Sau, which is also called Thuy Van beach, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Vung Tau. The beach’s located in the East, stretches from Nui Nho mountain to Chi Linh. The temperature is moderate around the year, with clear water and sand as well as gentle waves. Bai Truoc is 5km away from Bai Sau, which has more beautiful scenery but there are less tourists due to pollutants disposed from fishing ships.

Con Dao

Con Dao is a historical site. On this land stood Con Dao prison where many communists were tortured and killed. However, the natural beauty of Con Dao has been discovered and utilized in recent years, making it a must visit destination on your Vung Tau trip.

Long Hai
Belonging to Long Dien district, Ba Ria Vung Tau province, 12km away from Vung Tau city, Long Hai is an appealing amusement and entertainment destination. Long Hai beach is quiet gorgeous and peaceful with white and smooth sand. There are resorts in Long Hai with breathtaking sight and various activities. Other splendid places you should visit include: Minh Dam mountain, Dinh Co beach, Truc Lam Chan Nguyen temple, Tram lake

Linh Son Co Tu

Linh Son Co Tu is an outstanding religious destination of Vung Tau. Being the oldest pagoda of the city, Linh Son Co Tu worships a delicately sculptured Buddha statue.

If you are a Buddhist, come to Linh Son Co Tu. However, if you are a Christian this Jesus statue welcomes you. Lying on top of Nui Nho mountain, the statue was recognized as the biggest Jesus statue of Asia in 2012 with a 32m height, 18.4m arm span and more than 1000 stairs.

What to do

Exploring Mui Nghinh Phong
Mui Nghinh Phong with three upstanding sides will challenge any adventurer. Nghinh Phong has been turned into a tourism attraction with restaurants, bars, and lounges in the area. all have a view towards the sea. In ebb tide, you can follow the rock path to get to the island.

Climbing Tao Phung mountain
Following Ha Long street, you will reach Tao Phung mountain. Climbing to the top of the mountain, you will find the Jesus statue, a statue with 32m height that can be observed from everywhere around the city

Participating in entertainment activities
If visiting and observing are getting you bored, let’s have a go at some more active activities. This beautiful sea city brings you options of swimming, racing and riding horses, all along the coastline. You are also able to visit religious places, take part in thrilling games and visit the water park (the first water park on a mountain in Vietnam), enjoy your meals with wonderful sight in Ho May resort. You can also take cable car in Ho May or in the opposite of Bach Dinh

Going to Bai Truoc when the night comes
Bai Truoc is a lively area of Vung Tau after sunset. There are countless street hawks selling delicious food. You can also rent a tandum bike to wander around. Before leaving Bai Truoc, don’t forget to visit 15 Le Loi street to spectate dog racing in Lam Son stadium (only on Saturday night).

Before coming back to your hotel when night comes, you should visit lighthouse on top of Nui Nho mountain. Observing Vung Tau’s vibrant nightlife from the lighthouse will surely be an unforgettable experience

Socializing with Friends
If you just want to spend the night chatting and fooling around with your friends, come to 209 Thong Nhat street. Emigrating “tra chanh” culture from Nha Tho street, Ha Noi, Thong Nhat is a place to gather with a cup of iced tea and bowl of sunflower seeds. You can talk all day with a cup of tea and sunflower seeds, sit on the sidewalk, and watch the world go by

Night food
Just like many other provinces in the south, Vung Tau is a sleepless city. Meals are always ready for your hungry stomach even in 2 – 3AM. The street around Dien Bien cinema is called Night Food Street, and it sells many Vung Tau specialties such as oyster soup, seafood soup, banh khot and grilled meat at reasonable prices. You can search for snails in Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Nguyen Truong To street, or for dried cuttle on Le Lai, Ly Tu Trong street. Don’t forget to complete your wander with a cup of coffee in Mui Da.

This breakfast course of Vung Tau is definitely an interesting dish. The noodle is flipped several times in  the air before being put in a bowl. The noodle itself is made from fresh eggs so the noodle is  is tough, stringy, fragrant and delicious. The broth is clear with the strong flavor of simmered pork bones

The crust is rice powder with shrimp and green onion filling, all of which then are deep fried. The crust must be skifully blended in order not to be too dense or too watery. The meaty taste and mouth-watering fragrance of fried onion and shrimp are the main drawcards.

Vung Tau oyster soup

The rice must be carefully chosen and simmered before adding the oyster. Oyster also has to be fresh and well marinated. Those two ingredients are served together and customers themselves add oyster into the rice soup right before eating. Side dishes added beside oyster include: fried coriander, onion, garlic and herbs. There is also mam nhi (kind of fish sauce with light taste and soft yellow color) which can be added.

Vung Tau is suitable for short day trip because the area and its destinations are quiet small.
